How many of you are grandparents,
and what does that mean to you?
How many of you rely on your parents
to help with childcare?
What are your memories of your grandparents, not everyone has grandparents for a variety of reasons , so if you can just think of the word grandparent and what is the first thing that comes into your mind?
The Bristol Grandparent Support Group.
The group was set up when I lost contact with my granddaughter due to my sons divorce.
We had been part of her life for 7 years and it suddenly stopped.
When these things happen in your life you have two options, you sink or swim.
I decided to swim.
So the idea of setting up a support group was born.
OVER ONE
MILLION CHILDREN
• Are denied contact with their grandparents
due to family breakdown.
• This can be due to separation, divorce, alcohol/drug dependency , domestic violence, bereavement or family feud.
In The Classroom.
• There will be children in your class who
are experiencing this situation.
• Loyalty to resident parent.
• Step Grandparents?
• Confusion , why have their grandparents
let them down?
• If I say nothing………
How Can Teachers Help?
• As teachers you always listen to what the children say.
• If parents have parted ask if the children are in contact with their grandparents , and the rest
of their extended family.
• The children can think that their grandparents have forgotten them.
Grandchildrens’ Rights.
• Every child has the right to contact with their grandparents if they wish and it is safe for them to do so.
• Grandparents just want to be part of their grandchildren's lives, to give support when asked.
Knock On The Door.
• There is good news out there.
• A grandparent who had ,had no contact for several years, answered her door and there
was a handsome young man at the other side
of the door, “Hi Gran, I have missed you”,
he said.
We are all waiting
for that knock
on the door…
